‘HEY, TEACHERS, LEAVE THEM KIDS ALONE!’

No, I’m not going crazy, this is just one of the millions of verses that the British rock band Pink Floyd used to sing in their concerts. His progressive style, philosophical lyrics and staging have led Pink Floyd to become one of the most iconic and influential bands of the 20th century. But what is behind the history of this emblematic group of boys?

Originally founded in 1965, Pink Floyd was formed by a number of students who attended Cambridge University: Syd Barret (1946), Nick Mason (1945), Roger Waters (1944) and Richard Wright (1945).  The history of this group can be divided into two well-defined stages, the first one with Roger Waters and Syd Barret as the creative leaders; and the second one, after the departure of Roger Waters.  Once these two members left the band, the guitarist David Gilmour took the lead.

Their personal and psychedelic style, together with their amazing spectacles in their concerts, gave them great popularity, to the point of considering them as the parents of symphonic rock.  However, it was not until 1973, with the release of their album Dark side of the moon, that they became known worldwide. Later, in 1980, they released what became the group’s most renowned album, The Wall. The album was such a success that it was even made into an animated film that included the same title and whose script was written by Waters himself.  Here you have some of the images that it included.

Finally, with the abandonment of Waters in 1983, the band broke up. But, four years later, Mason, Wright and Gilmour reunited again and returned to the world of music with an album that became an instant hit, A momentary lapse of reason (1987).
